Oh, Mary! is an uproariously dark comedy about a miserable, suffocated Mary Todd Lincoln in the weeks leading up to Abraham Lincolns assassination. Unrequited yearning, alcoholism, and suppressed desires abound in this 80-minute one-act play that finally examines the forgotten life and dreams of Mrs. Lincoln, through the lens of an idiot (playwright Cole Escola).... Following its critically acclaimed success and Olivier Award win for Best Entertainment or Comedy Play, Oh, Mary! has now extended through to 2027. Jinkx Monsoon returns to reprise their iconic original role for a strictly limited six-week engagement until 26 September. This is then followed by Lolly Adefope who takes up the role of Mary for the first time from 28 Sep 05 Dec 2026. ... Abraham Lincoln is explicitly portrayed as a deeply repressed, closeted gay man. The character is even referred to in the cast list simply as "Mary's Husband", and much of the show's comedy comes from his attempts to hide his affairs with his male assistant while managing a chaotic White House. While the play is a wildly inaccurate farce, it actually draws inspiration from real-life history: The "Bed-Sharing" Theories: For decades, historians have debated Abraham Lincoln's sexuality. As a young man, Lincoln famously shared a bed for several years with his close friend Joshua Fry Speed. The Historical Debate: While bed-sharing was a common, entirely platonic practice in the 19th century due to lack of space and money, it has led some modern writers to speculate that Lincoln may have been gay or bisexual. The Play's Take: The shows creator, Cole Escola, took these debated historical theories and exaggerated them to the absolute maximum for comic effect. The play itself is named Oh, Mary!, which is a nod to an old-fashioned slang term used within the queer community.
