In Conversation: Queer Perspectives: Donald Urquhart @ National Portrait Gallery

Free ticket required Book online, or visit the Gallery in person. Talks and Lectures | Friday Lates Buy tickets Donald Urquhart Gain a Queer Perspective on our Collection with resident artist Sadie Lee and her special guest, artist Donald Urquhart (whose A Michael Jackson Alphabet (2017) features in the Gallerys current major exhibition, Michael Jackson: On the Wall), as they discuss portraits which have a personal resonance. Before becoming an artist, Donald Urquhart worked as a postman, model and fashion journalist, later becoming a key player in the performance-art and drag-club scene in 1980s London. He first received recognition for his ink on paper works in 2000, made for nightclub The Beautiful Bend that he had co-founded in the early 1990s. More recently he has made alphabet word and image works focusing on single celebrity personas, including Joan Crawford and Judy Garland. He has been the subject of solo exhibitions at contemporary galleries in London and California, and his work has been included in group exhibitions at the State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg (2009), Dulwich Picture Gallery, London (2008), and the Museum fr Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt (2007). Donald Urquhart will also be leading a one-day workshop responding to the Gallerys major Michael Jackson: On the Wall exhibition on Saturday 4 August, 11:00-17:00.
