Cecil Beaton was a man of dazzling charm and style, and his talents were many. In his work for Vogue, from the l920s until shortly before his death in l980, he created some of the defining images of the 20th Century - of bomb-damage as well as ballgowns; of politicians and poets, as well as society hostesses and Hollywood stars. By turns social columnist, travel-writer, theatre, film and ballet critic, royal correspondent and war-reporter, he was, above all, a fashion and portrait photographer of supreme imagination, style and taste - and in the words of a colleague, the writer Lesley Blanch, The man who could have run Vogue single-handed. In this talk, Josephine Ross, author of Beaton in Vogue, explores Cecil Beaton's career with Vogue from his first, undergraduate, snap of a Cambridge student drama production, published in l924, and early contributions as a writer and illustrator for the social pages, through his emergence, under the aegis of Vogue's proprietor, Conde Nast, as an all-round talent - chronicling, in articles and illustrations, as well as iconic photographs, the fashions, faces and events of the changing times, over six decades, to create today an extraordinary historic and artistic legacy, within the pages of what he called This fascinating magazine. Josephine Ross worked for Vogue on leaving university, before becoming a full-time writer. Besides Beaton in Vogue, her publications include Society in Vogue; Royalty in Vogue and the two Vogue Bedside Books, as well as Jane Austen, A Companion and a number of other histories and biographies.
