LGBTQ History Club - Queer Nostalgia in Musical Films

Dr Gilad Padva explores the tension between utopian nostalgia and devastative melancholia in spectacular cinematic musicals. He also highlights the musicals' tendency to dichotomize the real world and the theatrical or imagined psychical space, a refuge in which gay sensibility can be manifested, tolerated and celebrated. In their fusing of sex and despair, romance and alienation, infatuation and bigotry, these films challenge the musical's formulation as utopian, idyllic, or, at least, softened version of reality. *Dr Gilad Padva is a film and media scholar who focuses on New Queer Cinema, popular culture, visual communications, pop music, philosophy, body politics, sexualities and men's studies. He is also the author of Queer Nostalgia in Cinema and Pop Culture (2014), and he publishes extensively in international academic journals, international collections, and international encyclopaedias. He currently works for Beit Berl College and the Open University of Israel.
