Lesbian and Gay History often gets overlooked, forgotten or lost. Sometimes this is accidental, sometimes deliberate, sometimes ideological. But times are changing and (at least in Britain) the past lives of lesbians and gay men are now being researched, captured and recorded. Richard Bliss (Actor and Creative Director of Projects Galore) and Kate Sweeny (Film-maker and visual artist) have created a theatrical walking tour for Newcastle Pride 2014. The tour will make accessible the social and legislative frameworks that have surrounded lesbian and gay lives from the earliest beginnings of urban life. The tour uses performance, recordings and film to share undisputed facts with a peppering of fiction to imagine what gay life in Newcastle might have been like from the 16th to the 21st centuries. The walking tour is a circuit of approximately two miles avoiding as many obstacles as possible (such as steps and stairs and it includes standing for periods of up to 10 minutes. The tour lasts about 1hr 30 minutes. Everyone is welcome but Richard and Kate are not able to provide personal assistance.
